WAG Pet Publicists Wanted - Help Our Pets Find Forever Homes!

Here's a question for you - what do Justin Bieber, Lassie, and Jennifer Lawrence have in common?

Yes, they're all famous, or infamous, depending on your point of view. But they also each have a publicist - someone who keeps them in the public eye.

A publicist is a person whose job is to generate publicity for famous people. They're in the business of bringing attention to their clients in many different ways. For example, Justin Bieber's publicist arranges meetings with his fans. Lassie's publicist contacts magazines willing to do a story about the talented dog. Jennifer Lawrence's publicist sends photos and information about the star to movie directors, hoping to get their attention.

WAG rescue dogs and cats deserve just as much attention as those people, if not more. So we're looking for people willing to do some behind-the-scenes work and help these great pets find homes.

As a WAG Pet Publicist this is some of what you'll do for your "clients":

  • Have a Meet/Greet session where you'll get to know the personality of your client, and discuss the best possible home for him or her.
  • Arrange photo sessions with some of our volunteer photographers for doggy glamour shots.
  • Help create flyers to spread the word about your client.
  • Look into opportunities for your client to make personal appearances at Petsmart, or maybe just a stroll at Meridian Park wearing an "Adopt Me" vest.
  • Network your client's photo through email, Facebook or other social media.
  • Use local media outlets to spread the word: radio, tv or newspapers.
  • Work with WAG to find other ways to bring exposure to these awesome animals.

Our Pet Publicists teams will have 5-6 people and are assigned no more than two clients at a time. Teams will be a mix of age ranges and students are a VERY IMPORTANT part of this process, so anyone from age 10 and up is encouraged to join us. Networking-savvy adult volunteers are also welcome!

If you're interested in becoming a WAG Pet Publicist, email wagvolunteer@gmail.com for more info.

Remember - THE ANIMALS NEED YOU!

Duke is ready for a home.

Our boy Duke is ready for a great home. He's been our foster dog for awhile, was heartworm positive when we first rescued him but his treatment is finished. He has that typical goofy Boxer personality and gets along with other dogs and cats. He wants to be your indoor pal - no tossing him in the backyard and leaving him alone. He's polite and quiet, housebroken and will cross his legs for as long as necessary to keep from doing anything in the house or his kennel! He had a previous rear leg fracture that healed oddly, so he has a little "hitch" in his gait, but runs and plays like any normal dog. Duke is an older boy - about 6 years old, 55 lbs. and a spunky fun guy. We'll be glad to introduce you to this love bug!

Puppy Facetime

New babies! Here's Andy - one of four siblings. Mom was a beagle, not sure about dad, but maybe Border Collie mix? We have 3 boys and 1 girl - all black with white markings and maybe 6 weeks old. It'll be a few weeks before they're vaccinated, dewormed, spayed/neutered and ready for homes. In the meantime, they're chilling at the what we affectionately call the WAG "dog ranch".

The WAG family grows

Welcome to new WAG foster family Victoria and Michael with Koa, right after leaving the shelter. She's so happy to be out of those small cages! Thanks to this awesome couple for opening their home to this sweet girl!

Meet baby Belle

These are some scary pictures. This little girl has only experienced about 12 weeks of life and this is what it's brought her. A passer-by found her sitting in the middle of a country road. In his words, "almost as if she was saying 'go ahead, run me over, please.'"  He pulled over, opened the car door and she gratefully crept toward him. A typical dog - trusting humans to make things better. So how could we not try and give her a brighter future?

She's been named Belle - our own little version of Beauty and the Beast. This tiny girl of only 7 lbs. must be tough to have held out in the recent cold weather without a regular food source. She's severely underweight and malnourished

We took her to Monroe Veterinary Clinic for a check-up, not knowing what problems might be uncovered other than the obvious case of mange.

Belle has the most serious case of demodex mange Dr. Jo Wellman has seen. Inflammation from a secondary skin infection has her skin bright pink and her lymph nodes extremely swollen. She's loaded with worms, covered with painful, crusty scabs and very dehydrated.

But the good news is she's alert, wags her tail and gives kisses. Belle still sports wisps of brown and white hair so there's a beautiful coat waiting to come out. We think a better life is just around the corner for this cutie.

Dr. Wellman sent us home with antibiotics, treatment for mange, prescription diet food, medicated shampoo, conditioner and other goodies.Belle is tucked in a comfy bed with soft blankets, has a bellyful of warm food and is sleeping. Tomorrow is a new day and a new start!

A big thank you to Jennifer and her husband for stopping and saving this baby and Stefanie for bringing her to our attention. Belle will be fostered by Melanie, who does an awesome job of nursing our foster dogs back to health.

Get ready for the awesome "After" photos soon to come! Watch our Facebook page for daily updates on her progress. www.facebook.com/wagwalton
